Westchester Rare Disease Hub

In collaboration with Westchester Biotech Project Europe, this year we are exploring options for creating a soft landing environment for European researchers to establish a foothold in the US community and market. Now in the early stages, this initiative will develop plans and strategies for creating a rare disease research incubator/accelerator space and supporting expertise.

There are estimated to be nearly 7,000 rare diseases which affect upwards of 30 million people in the US alone. In order for Congress to implement the Orphan Drug Act of 1983, to incentivize the pursuit of rare disease drugs by pharmaceutical companies, they created the definition that a rare disease is one affecting fewer than 200,000 people in the US.
